Frequently Asked Questions

What Does Acupuncture Treat?
The World Health Organization (WHO) published an official report listing 31 symptoms, conditions and diseases that have been shown in controlled trials to be treated effectively by Acupuncture. Those symptoms, conditions and diseases include: Respiratory, Ear, Nose and Throat, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Neurologic and Musculoskeletal Disorders, Reproductive & Gynecological Conditions, and Mental Emotional Problems. What Should I Do Before & After My Appointment?
Stay hydrated and eat a light meal or snack a few hours before your appointment. Wear or bring loose, comfortable clothes. A day or two before your appointment avoid brushing your tongue (if you do so) as part of the process involves looking at your tongue for diagnostic purposes. Avoid strenuous physical activity after your treatment and again be sure to keep yourself hydrated. Relax and enjoy!

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments needed depends on the duration, severity and nature of your problem. Typically, the more acute a problem is, the quicker it can be resolved. However, this is not always the case. Healing also depends on your body's ability to shift into a state of balance. While chronic conditions may require a series of regular treatments over time, sometimes they can actually clear up quite quickly. Therefore, we will assess your progress after the first couple of treatments and create a treatment plan based on your results.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Unlike hypodermic needles used to draw blood or give injections, acupuncture needles are solid and slightly thicker than a strand of human hair. Because of the small size you should feel little to no sensation when the needle is inserted. However, once in place, you may feel a slight ache or heaviness at the point of insertion or along the corresponding meridian. These sensations should be mild enough so you can rest comfortably during your treatment.
